The UoY Freedom Soc. was honoured to hear Steve Radford, leader of the Liberal Party 2005-9, speak last Friday on the 'Death of Liberalism'. His entertaining condemnation of some examples of Liberal Democrat hypocrisy was particularly enjoyable as Craig Martin - the chairman of the York Liberal Democrats - was attending the talk.*
*It was all in good humour.

March Road Breck Road Re-opening Hearing
The council hearing to re-open the section of Lower Breck Road by March Road has been scheduled for 9.30 Tuesday 11th Aug in Millennium House, Victoria Street
The overwhelming majority of residents wanted to have this section reopened, as we do, but the situation was delayed due to one objection that has required a Committee Hearing
We believe the re-opening will reduce gangs hanging round at this location and improve traffic flow in the Month Roads

Liverpool councillor accuses planning committee of ‘political bias’ over decision to approve Lib Dem’s shop railings
Reported by Marc Waddington, Liverpool Daily Post
A CITY councillor will resign from Liverpool council’s planning committee over claiming “political bias” allowed a Liberal Democrat councillor to keep security railings installed on a listed building.
Labour’s Richard McLinden said he was “disgusted” the panel gave Cllr Phil Moffatt the go-ahead to retain the railings, despite planning policy which stated they should not have been attached to the Grade II-listed Churchill’s Food Emporium, in West Derby Road, Tuebrook.
The railings were put in more than two years ago after youths were seen climbing onto the shop’s roof and attempting to rip out electricity cables.
Cllr Moffatt installed them without planning permission and was told because the building was listed, they would have to be taken down.
But yesterday, despite officers’ recommendations to refuse the application, the committee approved it.
Labour committee members argued the council would not have approved the application if it had not been made by a member of the ruling administration.
But Cllr Moffatt received strong support from Tuebrook councillor Steve Radford, who said it was “rich” for the council to be taking a dim view of the railings when it was accused of often failing to enforce against other breaches.
Cllr Radford said: “It is about time we tackled some of the big sites and deal with real concerns.
“I feel there is political mischief going on here and I do not like it from any quarter.”
But Labour committee member Cllr Anna Rotheray was adamant the railings should come down.
She said: “Cllr Moffatt knew this would be revisited and he may have to replace them.
“It is like one rule for the man in the street and one for council members.”
But planning chairman Cllr David Irving denied the claim of political bias, and said he “barely spoke” to Cllr Moffatt.
Footnote: this is from a council planning dept that has been feeble for decades over the deterioration of Orphan Drive Hospital and allowing Lister Drive Library to fall into disrepair since 2006.
Real problems of real hertiage sites going to rack and ruin whilst they harass a small businessman who has upgraded and maintained a historic building despite the council
If it was Asda or Tesco's no doubt our feeble Labour Group would remain mute

20-bed asylum house rejected by Liverpool planning bosses
Jul 8 2009 by Marc Waddington, Liverpool Echo
A HOME for up to 20 asylum seekers in a residential street has been blocked by city planning bosses.
The application to convert the former home for 12 mentally ill people in Newsham Drive, Tuebrook, attracted objections from the public and councillors.
A letter of objection from one resident who had previously lived next to asylum seekers stated that “for a considerable number of months, it proved impossible to explain that it is totally unacceptable to urinate out of upper floor bedroom windows on to our front garden.”
Footnote: sadly this report did not add that we spoken at the committee and strongly objected to the lack of facilities and high crime figurs in the area aggravated by high turnover population. The committee hears the case again in August and we objected to Newsham Park being used as a dumping zone for refugees

True ID Cards Agenda
Press releases saying the government has backed down on ID cards is deliberately misleading at the very time their real agenda is to press ahead with more intrusive powers.
On Wednesday 8th July 2009, the House of Commons will vote on a group of three ID-related Statutory Instruments* including one called 'The Identity Cards Act 2006 (Provision of Information without Consent) Regulations 2009'.
The other two establish fees and penalties that can be applied to anyone registered on the ID database.
We urge readers to write to their MP *NOW* to get them to vote against these key pieces of secondary legislation.
The 'Provision of Information without Consent' regulation would give powers to the Identity and Passport Service to pass on information it holds on you to a host of other agencies WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT.
This information would include not only official document numbers, and personal details like your name, addresses and signature (more than enough to facilitate massive identity fraud) but also your fingerprints and even - to the police, intelligence services, taxman and ANYONE ELSE THEY AUTHORISE - details of every time you had had your ID checked, e.g to register with a GP, open a bank account or apply for credit, or travel abroad. Your medical and financial dealings conveniently tagged and indexed for further snooping.
Having your personal details open to half a million civil servants is hardly privacy , but government having the right to sell it on without our consent is an outrage - protest before its too late
